What is Good Nutrition?
Before we can answer the question we need to understand a little bit about food.
Food is what the body needs to grow, mend itself (as when we get a cut and it has to be healed), provide energy (to work and play), to not get sick if our body can avoid it and to get well again if we do get sick. It is our immune system that works to try and stop us getting sick, and to get better again if we do get sick. Food is made up of different parts called nutrients, and these include :-
starchy foods, fats, oils and sugars for energy
proteins for muscles and other things
vitamins and minerals for bones, the immune system and other things
water, which must be clean so we do not drink things we can not see that make us sick.
Everyone needs to eat a mixture of all these nutrients each day - what is called a balanced diet.
When a person gets ill their immune system has to work extra hard to make them get well again, so they need more nutrients than when they are healthy. This is particularly so for proteins, energy and the vitamins and minerals that are important for the immune system as well as those nutrients that act as anti-oxidants in the body - such as vitamins B, E and C as well as SELENIUM.
So now we can answer the question. Good nutrition is when we eat enough nutrients each day by eating a balanced diet. It is about what you eat and how much you eat.
The exact foods selected will depend on (amongst other things) :
food people know and are familiar with
food that is affordable
food rich in vitamins and minerals.
No single food is either good or bad, but it is the combination of different foods eaten over weeks and months and years which affects our health.
